Sweetheart Scams

A sweetheart scam, romance scam, or catfishing involves a scammer creating a fake online profile to engage victims emotionally and romantically. The scammer builds trust and affection over time, often through dating sites or social media, and eventually asks for money or personal information. These scams can be particularly devastating because they exploit the victim's emotions and trust.

Verify their identity.

Use reverse image searches on their profile pictures and check their stories for consistency. Is it associated with another name or details that don't match up? Those are signs of a scam.

Approach online relationships slowly.

Emotional urgency—declaring feelings of love, telling heart-tugging stories about their financial situation, using high-pressure language, or trying to make you feel guilty—is a scammer tactic designed to make you act before you think. Slow down.

Don't send or receive money.

Never send or receive money or gifts from someone you've met online, no matter how convincing their story is. If the request comes from someone you think you know, check with them offline to ensure it's them.

Keep personal information private.

Avoid sharing sensitive information like your full name, address, birth date, financial details, or social security number. Never share intimate photos with an online acquaintance, and think twice before using a webcam.

Get a second opinion.

Ask a friend or family member if you're unsure about someone.

Trust your instincts.

If you suspect a sweetheart scam is targeting you, cease communication and report the scammer to the platform you're using and to relevant authorities.
