National effort aims to protect clients from scams during Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

First Interstate is proud to join the American Bankers Association (ABA) and banks across the country in the annual #BanksNeverAskThat campaign — an industry-wide initiative to help clients recognize and avoid scams.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, Americans lost an estimated $12.5 billion to scams in 2024 — a 25% increase over the previous year. The #BanksNeverAskThat campaign uses humor and engaging content to teach people how to spot fraudulent bank communications that ask for sensitive information like passwords or Social Security numbers.

“Cybersecurity isn’t just about technology — it’s about awareness,” said Dale Daugherty, Chief Information Security Officer at First Interstate. “Scammers rely on urgency and confusion to trick people into sharing sensitive information. The #BanksNeverAskThat campaign helps our clients recognize those tactics and respond with confidence.”

Snap Out of It!

This year’s campaign theme, “Snap Out of It!”, highlights how scammers often create a false sense of urgency and trust — almost like putting victims in a trance. The campaign’s short videos show scams in progress, interrupted just in time by a bank employee who points out the red flags and urges the client to “snap out of it.”

Throughout October, First Interstate will share these videos and other scam-spotting tips on social media and in branches. The goal is to make cybersecurity education memorable and accessible — without the jargon.
