Overdraft Protection

Guard against returned checks with automatic transfer options.

First Interstate's Overdraft Protection Service* is a convenient way to guard against the embarrassment and costs associated with returned checks. As hard as you try, it's easy to make a mistake in your checkbook or forget to write down a check and end up with an overdraft.

With Overdraft Protection Service, you can guard against returned checks with your choice of three great automatic transfer options: from your Savings or Market Interest account, from a Balance Plus line of credit, or from your First Interstate MasterCard or VISA.

All three options are activated automatically, so the transfer covers your checks before you get into an overdraft situation. Transfers occur in $50 increments and there are no set-up charges or annual fees. There is a $5 transfer fee assessed whenever a transfer is made, so there's no cost for Overdraft Protection Service unless you use it.

Overdraft Protection Options

Option 1: Savings or Market Interest Account

You can designate your First Interstate Savings or Market Interest Account as the source to cover any overdrafts in your checking account. The advantages of choosing this option are:

  • There are no interest charges, unlike a line of credit or credit card.
  • The limit for your overdraft coverage is as large as your Savings or Market Interest balance.
  • Your monthly statement details the transfers between your accounts.
  • You can review transactions via Internet Banking and Day & Night Telephone Banking.

Federal Banking law sets a limit of six preauthorized transfers on savings and money market accounts per month. Transfers initiated by the Overdraft Protection Service are included in this limit.

Option 2: Balance Plus

Balance Plus is an overdraft line of credit tied to your checking account that activates if you overdraw your account. Balance Plus* can save you the embarrassment of bounced checks and the cost of overdraft fees. The advantages of Balance Plus include:

  • Your monthly checking statement includes details of your Balance Plus account.
  • Outstanding Balance Plus balances can be repaid with a small, minimum monthly payment.
  • Enjoy unlimited transfers with Balance Plus.
  • You can review transactions via Internet Banking and Day & Night Telephone Banking.

The Annual Percentage Rate on Balance Plus is 18%. Rate subject to change. Balance Plus requires credit approval and applications can be obtained at your local First Interstate branch.

Option 3: First Interstate VISA Platinum or VISA Platinum ScoreCard (Subject to credit approval)

Another great option for protecting against overdrafts is your First Interstate VISA. There are some real advantages to choosing this option:

  • Unlimited transfers with First Interstate VISA Platinum cards.
  • First Interstate VISA Platinum cards have a low minimum monthly payment.

You may also use your First Interstate VISA Platinum card for day-to-day purchases and receive these great benefits:

  • 3.99% APR* Intro Rate on Purchases and Balance Transfers. Terms and Conditions
  • Local Customer service.
  • Online access to www.MyCardStatement.com to view statements and make payments.
  • Earn free airline tickets and merchandise with the VISA Platinum ScoreCard.
  • Earn 2,000 Bonus Points with your first ScoreCard purchase.
